Where Can I Use My Mobility Scooter?

Most of our customers hire an Easy Pay Mobility scooter for the freedom and adventure it can bring. Whether you're popping to the shops or exploring further afield, enjoying time outdoors is a huge advantage of using a mobility scooter.

There are many indoor-based benefits of a scooter too. Some customers rely on their mobility scooter to move freely around their homes. Enclosed public spaces, such as restaurants and community centres, can also be scooter friendly.

These days accessibility is a top priority for many businesses. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how many places you can actually visit with your mobility scooter in tow.

Read on to discover the best places to use your mobility scooter.

Scooters: Inside Vs Outside Use

Outside

Pedestrianised Areas

All mobility scooters are safe to drive within pedestrianised areas. This includes pavements and all car-free routes.

Regardless of your scooter’s classification, maximum speed limits are set at 4mph. This may sounds slow but it’s surprisingly faster than a walking human! As a result, it’s important to be aware of others around you and to drive as safely as possible. See our top driving tips here.

Class 2 mobility scooters, such as 4mph models, are ideal for running errands and catching up with friends. Lightweight design and nimble steering make these scooters perfect for shorter journeys.

UK Getaways

A car boot scooter tends to be smaller in size and is collapsible. This makes it a fantastic option if you like to travel often or enjoy UK staycations. Simply fold your scooter down, pop it in your car boot and reassemble at your destination.

Entertainment

Outdoor entertainment venues, such as adventure parks and festivals, can still be experienced with a mobility scooter.

There are many features on offer for those with mobility requirements. This can include dedicated seating and viewing platforms, step-free access and free tickets for carers.

Each venue is different, so we always recommend checking a venue’s accessibility policy before your purchasing tickets. This will give you peace of mind that your mobility scooter is permitted on site and help to identity any extra benefits or available support.

The Great Outdoors

You don’t need to leave blighty to enjoy stunning beaches, picturesque peaks or magical forests. Even better, you can normally take your mobility scooter along for the ride!

An 8mph mobility scooter is a great option for seaside jaunts. Excellent suspension on these scooters makes them suitable for travelling along bumpy boardwalks and uneven piers.

All-terrain mobility scooters, such as the Galaxy Roadmaster Plus 4, are brilliant options if you enjoy trips off the beaten track. These robust, much larger scooters are powerful and created with rough terrains in mind. Large wheels provide stability and bigger batteries allow you to travel further for longer along outdoor routes.

On the Road

Main roads are free to use with a class 3 mobility scooter, such as the motorbike inspired TGA Supersport. These powerful scooters are permitted on roads and dual carriageways with maximum speeds of 50mph. This makes them a great option if you frequently take longer journeys or simply love being on the go.

Please be aware that you’ll have to follow the highway code and keep your amber lights flashing when using main roads. You’ll also need good eyesight, but a driving license is not required. Even better, at Easy Pay Mobility we take care of registering your road-safe scooter with the DVLA – one less bit of paperwork for you!

Inside

Smaller models, such as car boot or collapsible mobility scooters, are the perfect companion for indoor use. Their compact design and agile steering also make them ideal for zipping around the shops.

These types of mobility scooter have a smaller battery, which makes them lighter in weight for easy transportation. This allows you to take your scooter to all kinds of venues, including shopping malls, community centres, libraries and hotels.

The Library

These days the library is more than just a reading destination. Libraries offer a whole host of activities, events and weekly classes for people of all ages and abilities.

Libraries tend to be well equipped for mobility aid users, with well-considered lifts, ramps and rails.

Take your mobility scooter along to the library to enjoy scrabble club, ‘knit and natter’, quizzes and weekly tea & biscuit meetings. You can also learn essential ICT skills at the library. Check your local council website for more information.

Bars & Restaurants

Foodies and social butterflies don’t need to let reduced mobility get in the way of socialising and enjoying life to the full.

Many public spaces are successfully improving their accessibility to make their services more inclusive. This had led to a surge in accessible restaurants and bars popping up all over the country.

The hospitality sector is proactively encouraging bars and restaurants to think about step-free access, disabled toilets and training their staff to support those with mobility requirements. However, we always recommend calling ahead to check that your mobility scooter will be suitable for the restaurant or bar’s floor plan.

We love Tourism For All’s search engine for accessible food and drink venues across the UK. Explore it here

Cinemas

Enjoy the latest blockbuster from the comfort of your mobility scooter. A visit to the cinema is something that can be enjoyed by all the family. Cinemas tend to have ramp access into the screen room, as well as dedicated spaces to park your scooter.

A great source for accessible film screenings is Accessible Screenings UK. They have a searchable database for film listings at inclusive venues.

Around 90% of the UK’s cinemas are part of the UK Cinema Association and participate in their CEA card scheme. For cinemas, this encourages venues to provide an accessible experience for all. For consumers, signing up for a CEA card allows you to one free guest ticket so you have adequate assistance during your visit.

Home Sweet Home

Being able to move around your home with ease and without pain is possible with a mobility  scooter.

Most mobility scooters are fitted with swivel seats. These not only provide comfort by taking the pressure off painful joints, but they also offer flexibility and movement. Who knew that a scooter could offer a helping hand with household chores!

Mobility scooters are designed with convenience in mind. Agile steering and varying driving modes enable users to easily conquer tight corners, narrow hallways and difficult parking spots.

Always keep your scooter dry, secure and fully charged when it’s not in use. For more tips on caring for your scooter read here

Public Transport

Don’t forget that you can take your mobility scooter on most forms of public transport once registered. Before you set off, check that your scooter is appropriate for travel and meet’s the operator’s accessibility requirements.  See our top travel tips here
